Founded in 1995, Louisville Area Fiber and Textile Artists (LAFTA) is an organization of visual artists whose work encompasses a variety of surface design and construction techniques, focusing on fibers, textiles and beads. Our mission is to provide support to our members and to increase community awareness of fiber and textile art. UPCOMING MEETINGS LAFTA meetings and workshops will be canceled until further notice. Meanwhile, we would like to use this space to share some of the projects and artwork that our members are involved with. Unfinished Projects Challenge During this period of social distancing, we challenged members to search their homes for undone projects in any area of fiber arts. It could be practical (darning socks) or aesthetic (embroidering a wall hanging). No matter what the unfinished project was, the challenge was to overcome whatever difficulty caused it to be put away until now. Here are some of our finished projects! Log in and go to the CHALLENGES tab to see all of the submissions and to read about the journey taken to finish each piece. Homemade Masks for Family and Friends The CDC recommends that we wear cotton face masks when we must be near people for essential activities, such as grocery shopping. One of our members, Kathy Loomis, has written a very detailed tutorial about how to make an effective mask. Thank you to Kathy whose blog is called Art With a Needle. Several members have submitted photos of their work in this massive undertaking to create 25 million artworks, each representing one refugee. UPDATE ON JANE DUNNEWOLD WORKSHOP We have not yet opened registration for the workshop because it is uncertain whether August will be a safe time to proceed. We are in contact with Jane and will provide more information about a date and registration when we have it.
